I had never visited Morocco or tried surfing, but I'd always wanted to give it a go! Living in the UK (with a lack of nice weather) and far from the coast, there was never enough motivation for me to try it. A surfer friend told me that Morocco was a great place to learn, with great weather all year round and welcoming locals. So, after some googling, I found Azrac Surf Morocco offering a great deal for a week during the summer and I booked a one week “learn to surf” package. Two months later, I was arriving in Agadir - ready for my Moroccan surf adventure! My first day of surfing was amazing! I woke up to a tasty Moroccan breakfast with the Azrac Surf team before we set off to search the sea for the nicest waves. We ended up near the camp at Devil’s Rock, a popular surf spot with a nice beach lined with tiny fishermen houses and small blue boats. My surf coach Morad started the first lesson with a warm-up and quick tutorial on the surf board terminology. Then we started practising paddling, watching for waves, and pop-ups: the move that takes you from laying on the board to standing (and hopefully surfing). The instruction that I got was awesome! Even though I was like a baby in the water, Morad was so helpful and encouraging. To start, he was pushing me into the waves so that I could try to stand up and catch them. It all felt really foreign but after a while, I started to get it and was really enjoying the challenge. The atmosphere is really nice as well, because most people in the water are beginner surfers too - all trying to do the same thing. It was nice to have a laugh when falling down or fumbling around in the water and not take things too seriously! I wasn’t sure if it was a good idea to travel alone in Morocco, but the Azrac team assured me that it was perfectly safe - and they were right! My arrival at the airport was easy and transport to the camp was provided. I immediately felt right at home at the Surf Riad - lots of foreigners and friendly Moroccans - and the vibe was very relaxed and comfortable. Even though I was traveling alone, it was easy to make friends with other surfers and locals. The villages are small with just a short distance between them, which made it easy for me to explore the local area during my free time. The Azrac team made me feel so welcome and happy about my choice to come to Morocco. Everything was taken care of - airport transfers, delicious meals (catering for my vegetarian needs!), surf equipment, relaxing hammam and massage session - so all I had to think about was catching waves! After a week of surf lessons, I can safely say that I’m no longer intimidated by surfing. In fact, I love it! I’ll return to Tamraght again when I can to visit Azrac and take more lessons. It was a great way to spend my holiday - doing something active every day and learning a new sport in the process. Who knows, maybe by next year I’ll be a pro surfer!
