Back in late 2016, we ran a competition with our friend Ben, creator of the new surf app Johnny on the Spot, with the top prize being a week's stay with us at Azrac Surf! Our winner, Emily, and her husband, Paul, scored a one week stay with us in September, and we recently caught up with Emily to find out what made her trip to Azrac Surf so memorable... How did it feel to win the competition? Total disbelief at first, I mean who wins an actual holiday?! Not only that, I didn't even realise I had entered the competition. I genuinely feel very lucky, I doubt I'll win anything this good again! I want to say a huge thank you to Johnny on the Spot and Azrac Surf for giving me this fantastic opportunity. “Whether any surfer wants to admit it or not, I think we’ve all had moments like looking at nice waves coming through the lineup maybe, only for a moment, feeling that we are in the presence of something holy. There is a spiritual-ness when you actually get in harmony with something as natural as the waves and the ocean, and yeah, it is definitely a religious experience." -Gerry Lopez Surfing has upped it's game. In the past we paddled out in the hopes that enough time in the water would make us a great wave rider, but now pros and amateurs alike are searching for ways to complement their surfing on land - from specific fitness regimes to diet and mindfulness. Legends such as Kelly Slater, Carissa Moore and Gerry Lopez admit to the practice of yoga behind their surfing success. There's a hype for yoga among surfers, as they realise the benefits and how it can greatly complement their technique and psyche in the water.
Yoga is a multifaceted practice that includes breath work, movement, stillness and so much more. As you dive deeper into yoga, you'll find that the core principles are similar to surfing... We recently hosted a Girls Surf and Yoga week with three lovely ladies from the United States and Germany. After a week of bonding over sunrise yoga, surf lessons, volunteering with the local animals, late night dinner chats and so much more - we didn't want it to end!
We snapped loads of pictures along the way so we could give you a preview of all the girl power that flooded Azrac this past week... Meet Lucy – she’s one of the founding members of MAA-Morocco animal aid, which is an association set up to help the street animals of Morocco.
If you’ve already visited this part of Morocco, you’ll remember all the friendly street dogs at the beach – the ones that enjoy the comfort of your beach towel and will happily snuggle up next to you, or the cats that rest on your lap whilst you sip your morning coffee. You’ll remember how gentle and how healthy and well looked after they are. |
